Reading Tips for Summer

Summer is in full swing. We hope all of our SPARTANS are reading daily.
A child's success as a reader begins much earlier than the first day of school. Reading, and a love for reading is very beneficial to academic success. These one-page parent tips offer easy ways for parents to help kids become successful readers. Although the tips are divided by age, many of them can be used with children at various ages and stages — we encourage you to choose the ones that work best for your child.

We are counting down to the last day of School!

Tips For the Month of May

  1. Get a move on, It's National Physical Fitness & Sports Month! Prep your child for it—as well as your school's field day (May 18), a favorite spring event with kids everywhere—with some family recreation activities. Take walks after dinner, go on a weekend bike ride, or have chin-up contests on the monkey bars at a nearby playground. For more fitness ideas, check out letsmove.gov, fitness.gov, and presidentschallenge.org.
  2. Keep kids safe The weather has warmed up and school's almost out for the summer, which means kids will be spending more time outdoors. Give them a refresher course in safety whether they're bike riding, swimming, or playing indoors on game systems. For more tips, go to pta.org and click on “Topics: Child Safety.”
  3. Give props to your children's teachers As the school year winds down, encourage your children to write thank-you notes to their current teachers. Prompt younger kids with suggestions like “Something new I learned this year was…”or “My favorite part of this school year was….”
Teacher Appreciation Week is, May 7 to 11.

How to Get Ready for TNReady

In every Tennessee classroom, teaching and learning looks different based on the textbooks, curricula, and lessons that
the school and teacher have chosen. State
leaders have a responsibility to make sure these varied learning opportunities are preparing all students for college, career, and life.
Our state tests serve multiple objectives:
• Provide feedback about students’ academic progress and how it aligns with grade-level expectations
• Give parents and teachers a big-picture perspective about how a student is progressing compared to peers across the district and state, including a student’s strengths and growth opportunities
• Build confidence and transparency about students’
readiness for post secondary and the workforce among Tennessee colleges, universities, and employers
• Help educators strengthen instruction and reflect on their practice
• Hold us accountable to serving all students fairly
Highlight schools where students are excelling, so we can learn from those who are doing well

In the link below, you will find details about TNReady, how long they will spend testing, what types of questions will be on the test, and more. Our goal is to help you prepare your child to learn and succeed everyday. If you have additional questions after reading this guide, please contact the school.
